Tabatabaei Historic House
Tabatabaei Historic House is one of the most well-known attractions of Kashan which is a must-see while visiting Kashan. This house was built in the 19th century which is an outstanding reflective of the wealthy families’ lifestyle of Kashan. Also this house enjoys all typical features of Persian architecture.
Tabatabaei House is located in the old part of the city in the center of Kashan. It is nearby Agha Bozorg Mosque and Kashan Bazaar in 15 minutes of walking and other touristic sites such as Borujerdi House, Abbasi House, Ameri House, Toy Museum, and Sultan Amir Ahmad Bathhouse.
Tabatabaei House belonged to Tabatabaei family and the head of the family, Seyed Jafar Tabatabaei, a carpet merchant, built this house in the name of his wife. This was constructed by Ostad Ali Maryam- the famous Iranian architecture- the architect of two historical places of Aminoddole Caravansarai of the Kashan Bazaar and Borujerdi Historic House.
Tabatabaei House inspired by traditional Persian architecture style. This house in located in the area of 5 000 square meters and includes 40 rooms. It consists of four courtyards which are divided into two parts: “andarooni” - women’s closed area and “birooni”- public area. Also the building has 3 wind towers, so-called “badgir”- the means of air conditioning system. Thanks to these unique structures that decrease the heat down and make the air inside the house stay cool in hot summers. There are two qanats (water canals), bringing water to the pools and fountains in the middle of the courtyards.
The exterior of the house is decorated with amazing carved wooden doors and windows and stunning ornament. The interior of the house includes multi-colored mosaic windows and paintings. This house also enjoys the painting of the legendary bird Homa (Sphinx) appearing in the plots of the decorations, devoted to the merchant’s wife, whose name was Homa.
